Wontumi yet to be charged, but will cooperate with investigators – Andy Appiah Kubi

A lawyer for New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, says his client is unwell but remains committed to cooperating with ongoing investigations.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (3 June), following Wontumi’s release from custody, legal counsel Andy Appiah-Kubi confirmed that the party chairman had been receiving medical treatment since last week and was still not in full health.

“I told you he wasn’t well and he was going through medical treatment even from last week when we were invited to come before the CID,” Mr Appiah-Kubi said. “He hasn’t been well, and he is still not well.”

Update

Wontumi was released on Monday, 2 June, after meeting a GH¢50 million bail condition imposed by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO). He had been held in connection with allegations of fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state.

According to Appiah-Kubi, Wontumi has so far only been cautioned and has not yet been formally charged. The lawyer noted that EOCO has requested Wontumi’s presence three times a week as part of the investigative process.

“They are still investigating, and at the appropriate time, when he is put before court, we will also prepare as well,” he said.

“We will be going back to them tomorrow to complete investigations,” he added.

Mr Appiah-Kubi also disclosed that Wontumi had been unable to respond to a separate invitation by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) due to his arrest and medical condition. He plans to contact CID headquarters to seek a new date.

“Because of the arrest, we couldn’t honour the CID invitation,” he said.

“I will call the CID headquarters to inform them about my client’s health condition and seek an adjourned date until his condition improves.”
