In a disturbing development, a military officer was shot in Avengo, a suburb of Bawku in the Upper East Region, earlier today.
The incident occurred under circumstances that are yet to be fully confirmed by authorities, but it is believed to be linked to threats made on social media and audio recordings in Kusaal about three months ago.
Those threats, which were circulated on social media, warned of attacks on the military if they did not withdraw from Bawku.
Sadly, this attack appears to be a direct fulfillment of those threats, raising concerns about escalating violence in the conflict-prone municipality.
Bawku has been a hotspot for ethnic and chieftaincy conflicts in recent years, with security forces deployed to maintain law and order.
The military has set up buffers in the Mamprusi area to prevent both sides from crossing into each other’s territories.
However, despite these efforts, clashes have resulted in civilian casualties, with about eight recorded.
The attack on the military officer is the second within the year and almost the same geographical location.
This has led to concerns that the situation may be spiraling out of control.
Security agencies are yet to release an official statement on the attack, and it remains unclear whether any arrests have been made.
However, sources indicate that military personnel in the area are on high alert following the shooting.
